The WERA National Series returns from a two-month break this
weekend for round two at Barber Motorsports Park. A high turnout is
expected thanks to the combined popularity of the series and
Barber’s layout.
There will be a day-long practice and Superstock qualifying on
Friday, and the racing gets started on Saturday, May 5. The mini
classes will precede the four-hour WERA/Bridgestone National Endurance
Series event, which begins at 12:45 p.m.
Vesrah Suzuki won last year’s endurance race at Barber, and they
began the ’07 season with their usual strong performance, winning
the opening round at Roebling Road. 5150 Racing took second at
Roebling, and they have proven success at Barber, where the team
finished third overall last year.
Sunday features the WERA/Michelin National Challenge Series, with
ten-lap sprint races that begin at noon. There will be 18 first-place
trophies awarded during the 11 scheduled races.
Many of the National Challenge winners at Roebling were the usual
suspects, including Tray Batey and Robert Jensen. Both riders took
wins at Barber last season and will be looking for more this weekend.
Among the up and coming riders to watch is 16-year-old Josh Day, who
won the 600 Superbike expert race in round one.
The WERA National Series is co-sanctioned by the AMA, a new
partnership that was announced at the beginning of this season. The
co-sanctioning helps riders in WERA make an easier transition to the
pro ranks of the AMA, and reinforces WERA’s long-standing record as
the premier U.S. endurance series.
Tickets for the WERA National Series at Barber Motorsports Park
are$30 for all three days, or $20 for Saturday or Sunday. Camping is
also available. More information about Barber, including driving
