Samsung Honda rider Josh Grant has been on the cusp of taking his first
AMA Motocross overall win for a while now; with it all coming together
at High Point Raceway two weekends ago. Pit pundits
often say that it's that first win that is the hardest, and once that
comes it all gets easier. Will this happen to the
soon-to-be 21 years old from
California
? I think so! Certainly he has the
speed, fitness, and equipment; and two weeks ago he had the right
combination. I caught up with Grant, who set the
second best Motocross Lites lap time on Saturday, to hear how he felt
about that first win.
Josh,
congratulations on taking your first AMA Motocross overall win at
High Point
!
Thanks, Jim it felt
great! Even on Saturday I felt good; my bike was
awesome the whole weekend. I didn’t even make any
changes with it at all from Saturday practice to the second moto on
Sunday – the whole weekend really came together.
You’ve had
all the ingredients to win, but as you said at
High Point
it all came together; does this give you more momentum and confidence
now?
Definitely; now I feel
the need to back it up. I plan to go out here this
morning and give it 110% to the end of the second moto – that’s what
it’s going to take. That’s exactly what I
did last weekend and it came together for me there. Since
then (
High Point
) everything feels better; my riding, my training; everything seems
easier because I am just so motivated to have that feeling again – of
crossing the finish line first!
You were out
here last weekend at the Southwick Invitational race, which you won;
will that help you for this weekend?
Well, the track was
completely different than what it is now. I mostly
did it to get the bike set up. I don’t feel that it
was a big advantage for me, but I am from
California
so I don’t get to ride this type of dirt very much.
I understand
that very recently you relocated to
Florida
; is that good for racing the AMA Motocross series?
For motocross; yes for
sure it’s better than being in
California
. There’s a lot more tracks to choose from than the
five we have in
California
; where they are all pretty much the same thing. I
just feel that living in
Florida
will be a big advantage for me because of riding the different tracks,
getting used to the humidity, and all that kind of stuff.
I love
watching the AMA Motocross Lites class – it’s so competitive.
What will it take for Josh Grant to win this championship?
Right now I am just
going race by race, and not really thinking championship. In
Supercross I was thinking “championship” at the first race and
focused on the entire series, but now I’d rather think race-by-race.
For me there’s no pressure – I just want to win!
