ESTOK OUT-DUELS BILANSKY FOR THUNDERBIKE WIN AT
BARBER
Aboard Buell Firebolt, Estok Also Takes ASRA Thunderbike Points Lead
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (August 13, 2006) - Veatch
Motorsports rider Dave Estok won a race-long battle with Hal's H-D/Buell-Hal's
Speed Shop rider Dan Bilansky to take a victory at the American
SportBike Racing Association (ASRA) Thunderbike National at Barber
Motorsports Park. Both riders were aboard Buell Firebolt
motorcycles. The win also moves Estok into the Thunderbike season
points lead after six of eight events.
Estok, the defending National Thunderbike
champion, led qualifying for the race on Saturday, posting a lap of
1:46.39 in wet conditions on the 2.38-mile Barber road course.
Bilansky qualified second with a time of 1:47.029.
Harley-Davidson/Buell of Frederick rider
Bryan Bemisderfer, starting from third position, got the jump on
Estok and Bilansky at the start of the 12-lap National and led the
first lap, with Bilansky second and Estok third. Estok passed
Bilansky and Bemisderfer together on lap two, and the trio of Buell-mounted
riders raced in tight formation until Bemisderfer dropped back with
a fading clutch on lap four. That left Estok and Bilansky to duel
the remainder of the distance for the win. Bilansky managed to put a
wheel under Estok on several occasions but was never able to make a
pass. Both Estok and Bilansky broke the Thunderbike track record
during the race, with Estok establishing a new mark with a lap time
of 1:34.160.
"Once Bemisderfer dropped back, both
Bilansky and I just put our heads down and poured it on," said
Estok. "I don't think I looked back once during the race, but I
sure heard Dan back there a few times and felt his front wheel right
next to me more than once.
"In the end, I had a little better luck
with some lapped traffic and that helped me hold him off," said
Estok. "The Veatch team put a great Buell motorcycle under me
today."
Nate Kern finished third on a BMW. Buell
riders Sam Rozynski (Sound Waves/Hal's Speed Shop), and Joe Rozynski
(Sound Waves/Hal's Speed Shop) were fourth and fifth. Bemisderfer
finished sixth. William Thomas was seventh on a Ducati, followed by
Buell rider Anthony Caligiuri (Liberty Harley-Davidson/Buell),
Richard Dubarton on a Suzuki, and Buell riders David Meyers (Delta
Distributing) and Greg Avello (Bader Motorsports/Hal's Speed Shop).
Buell racers also took two wins and two
podium finishes during the Championship Cup Series support races at
Barber. Estok won both CCS Expert Thunderbike and CCS Expert
SuperTwins.
Estok took over the Thunderbike season points
lead with his win at Barber. After six of eight races, Estok has 161
points, Bemisderfer drops to second with 154 points, and Kern is
third with 134 points. The next race on the ASRA Thunderbike
National schedule is September 9-10 at Autobahn Country Club in
Joliet, Ill.
