Product Test: MSR NXT Gear
Not long ago we reviewed MSR's excellent new retro gear, the
"Old Skool" line, which was fantastic. Now
comes the top-of-the-line MSR NXT.
For 2009 MSR has incorporated some new features, which in the
pants include AVT (Advanced Venting Technology) - essentially
"air scoops" around the knee panel. This technology
is designed to bring significant air into the knee and overall leg
area. Since the weather has not been so hot or humid
in Michigan recently, I could not fully appreciate the benefits
of this. However, I did notice air flow. Not only does the new
AVT feature of the NXT bring in air, it also provided knee
protection. In addition; in the knee area MSR has high quality
leather inner knee panels, for both grip and heat protection.
There are also grooves molded into the leather that add extra
bike grip. It's the spandex type material in the inner leg
section and rear panel (butt) areas that I truly appreciated -
significantly contributing to the comfort and overall feel of the
NXT pant. While they have been made this way for the past
several years, it is important to emphasize that MSR has made the
NXT pant in a pre-curved ride position - again adding to the entire
fit and feel. Final benefits of the MSR NXT include the
cuff-less, fully lined legs, and the nicely done hook on the rear of
the pants to hang them after drying.
As with the pant, the NXT jersey is also significantly updated.
While this was not the vented version, there is a new vented section
below the back collar, and across your shoulder area that truly
helps to wick away moisture and manage your sweat! The
extremely comfortable collar feature's MSR's logo and Lycra dirt dam
to keep the roost away. Additional venting under the arms and
along the sides of the jersey also contributes to an overall
coolness - literally and figuratively. As with the collar, the
sleeves are excellent: very light with micro cuffs! Big
attributes of the NXT Jersey is breathability and comfort.
MSR gloves have always fit me perfectly. They utilize a single
layer palm, with a second layer in only the high wear areas, so they
don't bunch up. Cool looking plastic on the back of the gloves
provides protection - while maintaining the comfort level! As
with the pants, the NXT gloves are pre-curved to fit better, and the
Lycra panels on the fingers make them truly "fit like a
glove." Silicone strips on the fingers add grip, and help
with overall lever feel and control.
Bottom Line: MSR has long known how to build quality, comfortable
gear. Recently they have also grown it into an excellent
looking, very relevant product as well. While my personal
tastes may direct me toward the Old Skool" line, the NXT line
is some very nice gear!
